Everton Summer Programs: Camp Counsellor – Kerry’s Place

Objective: To support the Scouting mission and programs by acting as the primary caregivers to campers. The Camp Counsellor is responsible for the planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out activities and guiding campers in their personal growth and daily living skills.

Reporting to: Program Director and Camp Director or Designate

Dates of employment: Everton Summer Programs 2018 will run the following weeks

  • July 22nd – 27th
  • July 29th – Aug. 3rd
  • Aug. 12th – 17th

Camp Staff will be required to attend a training date to be determined.

Responsibilities:

  1. Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, and respect for diversity, involvement and empowerment of youth.
  2. Assure campers are properly supervised at all times.
  3. Work cooperatively with other counselors and offer of service volunteers.
  4. Be aware of, and implement safety guidelines.
  5. Participate in the development and implementation of program activities within the mission, practices and principles of Scouting.
  6. Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff.
  7. Provide the daily care of each camper within your supervision including recognition of personal health needs.
  8. Be alert to campers and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems and discuss with Program or Camp Director when appropriate.
  9. Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behaviour.
  10. Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
  11. Set a good example to campers and others in regards to general camp procedures.
  12. Keep the archery range, climbing wall, obstacle course, riverfront, and all other camp areas clean, orderly and free from hazards.
  13. Supervise climbing wall, playing field, and riverfront as required.
  14. Meet and greet campers as they arrive and assist them in getting settled into camp.
  15. Other duties as assigned by camp management.
  16. Model all applicable risk management policies and procedures by program participants, volunteers and employees.

Qualifications:

  1. Enthusiastic and positive attitude
  2. Experience working with Cub and Scout aged youth (8-14 year olds)
  3. Enjoy camping and the outdoors
  4. Standard First Aid and CPR
  5. Ability to work as a team
  6. Outdoor skills and Scouting experience would be an asset
  7. Be able to provide a police record check clear of criminal conviction
  8. Must be willing to become a member of Scouts Canada and to submit to a screening process. A police record check is required for staff 18 years of age and older.
  9. Must be willing to abide by the Mission and Principles of Scouting

Working Conditions:

  • Camp Counselors will receive accommodation and will be required to remain on-site at camp for the duration of their employment.
  • One day off per week will be provided, commencing Friday evening until Sunday morning.
  • Camp Counselors will receive all meals at camp during the camp’s operational periods.
